In this image of the groom, interesting natural lighting coming from various angles said "drama," but this photo in color looked harsh, with conflicting color tones from the light, and a wall color that just didn`t gel with the color of the groom`s jacket. Turning the image black and white post-process turned a difficult lighting situation into a difficult-to-look-away-from photo. Winning.

I capture every wedding in color first (unless you`ve added on my black and white film package), but mostly because I do see the world in color. However, sometimes even in the moment, I know I am going to convert an image to black and white. A monochrome treatment allows any distracting elements (especially problematic in small spaces) to become secondary and isolates the beautiful bride.

Silhouettes almost always appear in monochrome, even when photographed in color. And a good silhouette needs framing, angle, and posing to communicate the message. I think this photo has all three - it was taken at the courthouse in Tucson right before this couple entered the courtroom for their wedding. What you don`t see are all the other couples waiting for their turn, crowding the hallways around us.
